“Punch” (“Wan-Deuk-i”) is a coming-of-age film about a boy and depicts the changes that happen in his life as he matures from childhood to young adulthood. Wan Deuk, the protagonist, grows up with his father by his side and spends his childhood without knowing who his mother is. Although he faces many difficulties with his father being disabled, he has a warm-hearted adult figure in his life, his uncle Mingu as well as his teacher Dongju. Wan Deuk has a fierce and aggressive personality so that when he feels anger, he takes it on people by beating them. His father starts to get concerned about Wan-deuk’s violent nature. However, as there are teachers and neighbors by his side, they helped him control and maintain his aggressiveness through introducing him to sports. Dongju visits his father in person so that Wandeuk can achieve his dream and persuades him to become involved in sports. Dongju’s compassionate actions show that despite Wandeuk and his father being handicapped and living in poverty, he is willing to love him unconditionally. Although every day may not have been peaceful, it is certain that they love and care for each other.
Initially, his teacher Dongju, was unaware of Wan Deuk’s circumstances – if he was late to school as he was helping his father, he would punish him severely at school. He did not realise that Wan Deuk wanted to hide his poverty and ended up embarrassing him in front of his friends by announcing he should get the supplies for the poor. Wan Deuk hated him so much that he went to church and cursed Dongju. However, as the movie progresses, it is revealed that Dong-ju was the most concerned about Wan Deuk and only wanted the best for him. Worried that Wan Deuk would skip meals, he brought boxes of rice for Wan Deuk, and was relieved to discover that Wan Deuk took the supplies that were provided from school. And it was also Dongju who helped Wan Deuk to find his mother later on. Dongju is the one to assure Wan Deuk that he should live without having to be ashamed of his poverty and as he was able to find his mother, Dongju creates a special bond with Wan Deuk.
Hassan, an illegal immigrant working in the church, helps Wan Deuk discover his potential in kickboxing. Although he is not fluent in Korean, he put in lots of effort to be kind to everyone and recommends Wan Deuk to the grandmaster. This allows Wan Deuk to grow into a true sports player. In a demonstration match, he witnessed Wan Deuk fighting too emotionally and demanded that he was not to come back. However, he was actually waiting for Wan Deuk to distinguish between mindless fighting and the real sport. It was difficult to get permission from both the grandmaster and his father but Wan Deuk he gradually worked towards his dream, by learning the rules of kickboxing and understanding that it was not simply fighting. Wan Deuk enjoyed kickboxing because within the ring, anyone’s status, money, and position became irrelevant. He felt that it was a fair space where he could compete solely with his own skills whilst also being able to forget thinking about his impoverished circumstances, which often plagued his mind.
In the movie, the people around him loved Wan Deuk-i unconditionally, and this gave him a lot of strength to grow into an adult. Like the people who supported Wan Deuk, I feel that no matter what your goals are, you need to have people who care and love you first. This would mean that even people who have no dreams can find their dreams. I have parents and friends who encourage and help me to achieve my goals as well as the fact that there are many teachers who help me think about my future. Thanks to this, I can do anything that I wish to do as I can find myself being able to rely on people in my community like Wan Deuk. In addition to this, even though Wan Deuk had a disabled father and a missing mother figure in his life, it seems that he grew up well thanks to his family and teacher Dongju who continued to love him unconditionally. When Wan Deuk did find his mother, he discovered that she was a foreigner. At first, he rejected his own mother but eventually came to terms with her identity. There was a scene where Wan Deuk was held like a child in his mother’s arms and this made me feel the invaluable importance of family in people’s lives.

[완득이]는 한 소년의 성장기 영화로 그가 어른으로 성장하는 데에 정신적, 육체적으로 도움을 준 주변 사람들과 환경에 관한 이야기이다. 완득이는 꼽추인 아버지 곁에서 자랐고 자신의 어머니가 누구인지도 모른 채 어린 시절을 보냈다. 장애인 아버지 밑에서 힘들게 자랐지만 그의 곁에는 마음씨 따뜻한 민구 삼촌이 있었고 자신의 츤데레 담임 선생님 ‘똥주’ 도 있었다. 완득이의 성격은 불의를 참지 못하기 때문에 화가 나면 사람을 무자비하게 때렸는데, 특히 아버지는 완득이의 폭력을 걱정하셨다. 그래도 그가 스포츠와 싸움을 구별할 수 있게 도와주신 선생님과 이웃들이 있었다. 동주 선생님은 완득이가 꿈을 이룰 수 있도록 직접 그의 아버지를 찾아가 완득이가 킥복싱을 할 수 있도록 설득을 해주었다. 영화 속 인물들은 사회 전체에서 보면 장애인이며 빈곤한 생활을 하는 사회적 약자였지만 하나의 공동체 안에서 서로 조건 없는 사랑을 하고 있었고, 어떤 위험이나 역경이 와도 서로를 돕고 믿었다. 비록 매일이 평화롭지는 않았지만 그래도 서로를 사랑하고 있는 것은 확실했다.
똥주 선생님은 완득이가 아버지를 도와서 지각을 했을 때도 모질게 매를 때리고, 가난을 숨기고 싶은 완득이의 마음을 몰라주었다. 게다가 반 아이들 앞에서 빈민가정 구호품을 가져가라고 말해서 완득이를 창피하게 만들었다. 그래서 완득이는 동네 교회에 가서 동주를 저주하는 기도를 드리기도 했다. 하지만 영화가 진행될수록 완득이를 제일 위해주고 걱정하는 사람은 동주였다. 제대로 끼니를 먹지 못할까 봐 완득이를 위해 학교에서 나눠주는 쌀밥 박스를 가져다주었고, 나중에는 완득이가 말없이 보조품을 가져간 것을 알았을 때는 흐뭇해했다. 그리고 완득이가 나중에 어머니를 찾을 수 있게 자리를 마련해 준 것도 역시 동주 선생님이었다. 동주 선생님은 완득이에게 가난 때문에 부끄럽게 여길 필요 없으며, 당당하게 살아야 한다는 것을 알려주었고, 어머님을 만날 수 있는 다리 역할을 해준 소중한 인연이었다.
교회에서 일하는 불법체류자 인도인 남자 하산은 완득이가 자신의 꿈을 찾을 수 있도록 도와주고 킥복싱을 제안한 사람이다. 그는 아직 완벽하지 않은 한국말을 했지만 누구에게나 친절했고, 관장에게 완득이를 추천해 주었다. 또한, 완득이가 만난 관장도 완득이가 진정한 스포츠 선수로 성장할 수 있도록 도와주었다. 관장이 시범경기를 시켰는데 진짜로 감정을 담아서 싸움을 하는 것을 보고 다시는 찾아오지 말라고 했지만 사실은 완득이가 싸움과 스포츠를 구분해 주기를 기다렸던 것이다. 완득이는 싸움이 아니라 킥복싱을 통해 규칙도 학습하고, 주눅 들지 않고 연습한 결과, 원장과 아버지의 허락을 어렵게 받았고, 꿈을 향해 열심히 노력하게 되었다. 또한 완득이가 킥복싱을 좋아했던 이유는 자신의 신분과 돈, 직위에 상관없이 진정한 실력만으로 상대를 맞설 수 있었기 때문이었다. 그동안 완득이를 괴롭혔던 가난과 자신의 상황을 잊고 오로지 스스로의 실력으로 겨룰 수 있는 공정한 공간이 링 위라고 느꼈기 때문이다.
영화 속 주변 인물들은 완득이를 조건 없이 사랑해 주었고 이는 결국 완득이가 어른으로 성장할 수 있게 많은 힘을 주었다. 나는 이렇게 어떤 일을 하든 먼저 걱정해 주고 사랑해 주는 사람들이 있어야 꿈이 없던 사람도 꿈을 찾고, 자신이 하고 싶은 것을 열심히 할 수 있다고 생각한다. 나에게는 내가 하고 싶은 것을 할 수 있도록 격려와 도움을 주는 부모님과 친구들이 있고, 또한 나의 미래를 생각할 수 있도록 돕는 선생님들도 많이 계신다. 덕분에 나도 완득이처럼 공동체 안에서 의지하며 하고 싶은 것을 열심히 할 수 있다. 또, 완득이가 장애인 삼촌과 외국인 엄마를 두었는데도 잘 자라나간 것은 자신을 조건 없이 계속 사랑해 준 가족들과 동주 선생님 덕분이었을 것이다. 그리고 처음에는 완득이가 외국인 엄마를 거부했지만 엄마의 진심을 느끼고 어린아이처럼 안기는 모습을 통해 부모님과 가족의 소중함을 느끼게 해준 영화였다.
