In modern society, there has been massive development within the media and insurgence of a culture focused on outer appearance. This gave birth to a social culture dubbed โ€˜lookism,โ€™ a culture solely focusing on the outer appearance of a person whilst ignoring oneโ€™s personality. In fact, some judge a personโ€™s character through their appearance. For example, one would further themselves from a person that has a disability or is seen as ugly and treats only those that are โ€˜hotโ€™ or โ€˜cuteโ€™ with kindness. A personโ€™s social popularity depends on their appearance as well.

The novel [The Hunchback of Notre Dame] starts with a Priest Claude Frollo adopting a deformed and abandoned baby Quasimodo. Despite being an infant, Quasimodo had a wart under one of his eyes; his head seemed to have been pushed inward between his shoulders; his back was curved with a bow; his chest seemed to be popping out and his leg was twisted. Frollo is then tasked to ring the bell of the church but eventually becomes deaf. This becomes the reason for Frollo allowing Quasimodo to leave the tower with him as he believes that Quasimodo will not be able to hear the mocking of the crowd outside showing how much Frollo cared for Quasimodo. While outside the two men see a dancing beautiful gypsy woman Esmeralda and both men fall in love. Frollo is conflicted between his religion and the woman but eventually orders Quasimodo to kidnap her. However, whilst attempting to do so, he is caught by Phoebus which sparks a mutual love between the two. Frollo, consumed by jealousy, stabs Phoebus and frames it on Esmeralda. Before her execution, Frollo promises her freedom if she swears to love him, which she refuses. Quasimodo attempts to hide her in the cathedral, but she is eventually found and executed. Frollo laughs at the body which infuriates Quasimodo which then kills Frollo and leaves the cathedral.

Despite having a monstrous outer appearance, Quasimodo is a truly kind person who deeply cares about others. When he was ordered to kidnap Esmeralda and was caught, he felt disappointed that Frollo acted as if he had nothing to do with it, but he never despised Frollo. He also realized that his actions as well came from a place of jealousy and repented for his mistake. While he was sheltering Esmeralda in the cathedral, he stayed away so that she would not see his monstrous face and feel uncomfortable. In addition, he gave a whistle so that it would be easier for her to call him. Every day, he would give her flowers to comfort her. However, when Frollo murdered her and laughed coldly he pushed Frollo off the edge and chose to kill himself in the end.

The reason Frollo is a character for the reader to condemn is because he is a coward of a man that hides behind others and blames them for the actions he has taken. When he sent Quasimodo to kidnap Esmeralda and got caught by the police, he ran away hiding and leaving Quasimodo behind. He threatened Esmeralda to love him in exchange for her life. Finally, he laughed at the corpse of Esmeralda after she was executed. On the outside, he was a loving and kind priest whilst being a cruel and jealous man on the inside.

In my opinion, the most important aspect of a person is oneโ€™s personality. When young, everyone wants to be around those that are pretty and popular amongst peers. However, I believe the inside of that person matters more. A giving personality and a heart that cares for others is important as they are the ones that will come and be there for you in your greatest time of need.
