30년간 국민의 기대수명은 11년이 늘어 2017년 기준 82.7세이고, 영아 사망률이 1/16으로 줄었다. 의료 수준의 발달로 암에 걸려도 살 수 있는 암 생존율도 크게 개선되었다. 우리나라는 1989년부터 전 국민 의료보험이 시행됐지만 의료비 지출이 OECD 국가 중 가장 높고, 가계가 직접 부담하는 의료비가 선진국 평균보다 1.5배 정도 된다.
