[Novel] – The Plague

We live in a world of irregularities and those irregularities are what put our lives at risk. Not just the daily incidents that occur but the constant appearance of contagious viruses such as MERS, SARS, and currently, COVID-19 are proving to be difficult to control. Luckily, the fatality rate does not seem to be very high but the fact that these viruses are overwhelmingly contagious forces the populous to restrain from interacting amongst ourselves and among cities and even certain nations. With the world at such a state, the people’s priority has been avoiding the virus. The constant fear such an event presents makes the people purchase masks, sanitizers, and daily items and to cut any physical interaction amongst the outside world all to avoid the virus. Some religious groups are labeling this as a divine punishment and enforcing the importance of their assembly while others take advantage of the panic and fear to hoard products and purchasing them for a substantially higher price for profit. With the spread of COVID-19 and subsequently, the rise of paranoia, trust, and comradery amongst people has been lowering faster than the spread of the virus.

With the spread of the plague within the city of Oran in Algeria, the characters within the story present different reactions. Doctor Rieux, a medical doctor, requests assistance from the government and attempts to treat the patients to the best of his abilities. Also acting as the narrator of the story, he fought against the virus to the point of sacrificing for the people that needed him most. With the reader essentially being outsiders of the story, they might agree with Tarrou’s, a fellow outsider within the story, opinion on building a medical college. However, I viewed Dr. Rieux as a better role model due to his drive to help the people to the best of his own abilities. Within the real world, we also saw a person have a similar drive as the Doctor in the story. A Chinese ophthalmologist by the name of Li Wenliang is one of the members of the medical staff who fought to spread the word regarding the COVID-19 virus. Despite the constant threats from the government, he fought against the virus but tragically passed away due to getting infected by COVID-19. Both people, fiction or not, are individuals that we must look up to and emulate for us to become better.

Another major character in the story is Raymond Rambert. Acting as a representation of the everyman, he goes through a personal arc that changes his perspective due to the hardships which he experiences. He starts as an average journalist whose only concern was his love and people with personal relationships with him who ends up not being able to return to Paris from Oran. During the beginning, he shows clear distress due to his situation and requests a permit to allow him to return home from Doctor Rieux. He then acts as a narrative foil to the Doctor stating that the doctor is living in an abstract world and the outcome that Rieux wishes can never come true. In the latter part of the story, Rambert finally gets the opportunity to escape, however, he decides not to after working together with the Doctor and becoming part of the community of survivors. He had become connected with the people despite the difference in the nation and continues to aid the medical staff in their times of need. Though he can be selfish and want to protect himself, it’s clear that he also cares for others and becomes someone who knows the importance of a community and helping people in said community. I can say that I highly respect the character for having the courage and understanding to change his stance. There may be many in our world who only talk about change but does not show through their actions. However, in the book, Rambert proved his bite was worse than his bark.

Lastly, the character that is arguably the most disliked amongst the readers but also whose characteristic could be the most realistic in our world would be Cottard. A criminal that is being chased by the Police. However, due to the spread of the Plague, he sees an opportunity to start a new life in Oran. During the chaos and confusion, he started to live amongst the people of Oran whilst smuggling items for profit. The plague essentially became the keys which freed him from the shackles of the label “criminal.” As the Plague started to die down, he became terrified of his outcome and questioned Dr. Rieux whether there was any chance the plague would come back. Cottard was a person who did not care whether the lives of people were at risk if only he could be safe from harm. In the world we live in, there are those who sell masks or sanitizers for a high price for profit, those who create chaos and panic for them to gain fame and clout on the internet, and more who are acting the parts of Cottard amongst us. Their only desire: to spread chaos and panic.

During this pandemic, although we must acknowledge the fact that no one is safe from the virus, we must not lose our composure and not fall into a state of panic. Only then can we live through such an event in our history. In the book, Dr. Rieux calls gather people to act as a medical staff which calms the people and allows them to feel safe. Despite fully knowing that combating the virus is impossible with human hands, they do not stop to do so for their community. The fact is, there is no guarantee that anyone will survive but this never discourages Dr. Rieux to the point of abandoning his responsibilities. In the days coming, the doctors and nurses all around the world must fight and follow Dr. Rieux’s example. Meanwhile, we as citizens must keep living our lives and not fall into chaos and the fear created by COVID-19. What we must remember is that we are not just individuals but communities, groups, cities, nations we must remember that we are not alone in this but altogether. Keeping distance amongst ourselves is our responsibility. Whilst nations must find a cure and not look to profit from it. To not think of them as just another pile of cash but to remember that we are all facing this problem. Only then, will we be able to live peacefully.

우리의 삶에는 부조리가 존재하고 그 부조리는 우리를 위험하게 만든다. 일상적으로 일어나는 각종 사고는 물론이고 몇 해 전에는 메르스와 사스, 현재는 코로나19 등의 신종 바이러스로 인한 질병으로 곤란을 겪고 있다. 치사율이 높지는 않지만 엄청난 전염력을 지닌 코로나 19는 지역과의 교류를 차단하고 특정 국가와 도시를 기피하기도 한다. 상황이 이렇다 보니 사람들의 최대 과제는 코로나로부터의 도피다. 전염병에 불안을 느낀 사람들은 바이러스를 막아줄 마스크와 손 세정제에 더해 생필품 사재기는 물론이고 사람들 간에 관계까지 단절한다. 특정 종교계는 이 상황을 신의 심판이라고 주장하며 여전히 집회를 강행하고 있고, 또 어떤 사람은 불안과 공포심을 이용해 매점매석을 하며 잇속을 챙긴다. 코로나 확산으로 생겨난 불안은 존재의 정당성을 보장받지 못한 사람들 사이를 나돌며 코로나보다 더 빠른 속도로 관계를 이간질 시킨다. 이렇게 갑자기 찾아온 신종 바이러스는 우리 삶의 근간을 쉽게 무너뜨리고 있다.

알제리의 작은 도시 오랑에 페스트가 창궐하자 각각의 등장인물들은 다양한 반응을 보인다. 의사인 리외는 오랑 시에 페스트가 퍼지기 시작하자 시 당국에 빠른 조치를 요청하고, 페스트가 퍼진 뒤에는 환자들을 치료하기 위해 애쓴 인물이다. 소설의 서술자이기도 한 리외는 묵묵히 자신의 일에 전념하며 온 힘을 다해 죽음과 싸웠고, 자신을 희생하면서까지 환자를 진료했다. 어떤 사람들은 외부인이며 보건대 창설을 주장한 외부인 타루를 더 높게 평가할지 모르지만, 나는 문제를 직접 해결하려 행동을 보이는 리외가 더욱더 귀감이 되었다. 이번 코로나19 사태에서 리외와 같이 몸소 나선 사람이 있다. 그의 이름은 ‘리원량’으로 중국의 안과 의사였던 그는 신종 코로나바이러스 감염병의 외부 공개를 주도한 의료진 중 한 명이었다. 이후, 경찰의 경고와 훈계에도 불구하고 그는 치료의 최전선에서 환자를 돌보다 결국 코로나 바이러스에 감염되어 사망했다. 이렇듯 묵묵히 자신의 의무를 다한 두 사람의 행동은 사회에 모범이 되었다.  

소설의 또 다른 핵심 인물이라고 할 수 있는 ‘랑베르’는 가장 보편적인 인간 유형으로 위기를 겪으면서 깨달음을 얻고 자신의 가치관을 바꿔나간 인물이다. 랑베르는 보건대에 참여하기 전에 사랑을 쫓고 관계를 중요시 여기는 사람이었다. 단지 기자의 신분으로 오랑에 왔다가 파리로 돌아가지 못하는 자신의 신세를 한탄하며 의사인 리외에게 외부로 나가기 위한 진단서를 요구했고, 오히려 리외에 대해 이성에 따라 말하고 추상의 세계에 살고 있다고 비판한다. 하지만 소설의 후반부에서는 탈출을 하기 위해 발버둥 치던 랑베르가 막상 탈출의 순간에 다가오자 떠나지 않기로 결정한다. 타루, 리외와 함께 보건대에서 일하면서 인간적인 관계가 형성이 되었고, 더 이상 오랑시의 외지인이 아니었기 때문이다. 즉, 그들과 함께 보건대 활동을 하며 인간적인 정을 느끼며 공동체의 중요성, 연대의식과 참여의 가치에 대해 깨달음을 얻은 것이다. 그렇게 랑베르는 자신의 사랑에 대해 높은 가치를 두고 있으면서도, 사회에 헌신할 수 있는 인물로 성장했다. 나는 랑베르가 자신의 행동이나 가치관을 바꿀 수 있었던 용기에 높은 가치를 둔다. 생각의 변화는 쉽지만 그 변화된 생각을 행동으로 보일 수 있는 사람은 별로 없기에 ‘랑베르’라는 인물은 우리에게 변화의 모범을 보여주었다.

마지막, 어떻게 보면 소설을 읽는 독자들이 가장 싫어하면서도 현실에서는 흔히 볼 수 있는 인물이었던 코타르는 범죄를 저지르고 경찰에 쫓기는 입장이었다. 하지만 오랑시에 페스트가 퍼지며 정상적인 시스템이 붕괴되자 혼란을 틈타 새로운 삶을 맞이하는 인물이다. 페스트가 퍼지자 그는 다른 사람들과 어울리기 시작하며 밀매를 통해 큰돈을 벌어들인다. ‘죄인’이라는 속박에서 벗어나게 해 준 계기가 바로 페스트인 것이다. 페스트가 물러날 때가 되자 그는 불안해하며 리외에게 “다시 말하면, 아무것도 알 수 없다는 건가요? 어느 날 갑자기 다시 시작될 수도 있다는 말씀이세요?라고 물었다. 코타르는 페스트 환자의 전형적인 모습으로 자신의 사리사욕을 위해서라면 다른 사람의 운명은 어찌 되든 신경도 안 쓰는 사람이다. 현재 페스트와 같은 위기 상황에서 마스크나 손 세정제를 사재기하며 비싼 값에 팔아 자신의 이익을 챙기는 사람, 소셜미디어에 관심을 받기 위해 허위 사실 유포를 통해 사회적 불안을 조성하는 사람 등 우리 사회에는 수많은 종류의 코타르가 있다. 이러한 사람들은 위기 상황을 더욱 악화시키는 데에 능할 뿐이다. 

이번 코로나 사태에서의 우리는 그 누구도 전염병으로부터 안전할 수 없다는 것을 인식해야 하지만, 이로 인해 혼란에 휩싸이는 것은 안 된다. 사회 내 만연한 불신과 공포로부터 벗어나야만 전염 사태를 진정시킬 수 있기 때문이다. 카뮈의 의사 리유는 페스트 속에서 사람을 모아 보건대를 꾸린다. 이는 만연한 불신 해소와 공감능력을 회복하여 사람들 사이에 연대감을 강화했다. 대원들은 인간의 힘으로는 이 불행한 상황을 끝낼 수 없다는 것을 알면서도 병자에 대한 치료를 멈추지 않는다. 즉, 페스트 상황이 두렵고 또 사람들을 살릴 수 있다는 보장도 없지만, 자신이 살아있는 동안 리외는 의사로서의 책무를 다했다. 그렇기에 지금 현재 상황에서 의료진이 해야 할 것은 자신의 의무를 다하는 것은 물론이고, 코로나 19가 부조리하지만 이것이 자신이 처한 실존적 상황임을 긍정하는 것이 중요하다. 또한 우리는 도피가 아니라 묵묵하게 자기 일상을 지켜내야 한다. 불안으로부터 도망가고 싶은 욕구가 강할수록 우리는 자신을 더 옥죄게 되어있다. 그렇기에 우리는 공동체와 연대의식을 가지고 현재 주어진 실존적 상황을 담담하게 맞서며 일상을 이어가야 할 것이다. 이뿐만 아니라, 개인적인 보건위생을 지키는 노력은 물론, 사회적 거리두기를 실천해야 할 것이다. 백신 개발에 대해 기업과 국가적 이익이 아니라 신종 바이러스야말로 글로벌 체제에서는 이윤이나 자국의 이익이 아닌 공동체, 연대의식으로 함께 개발하고 보급해야 이 사태가 마무리될 것이다.
