I believe that Jekyll should be sentenced to life for his acts of murder and assualt. Not only has he committed great harm to society and the people around him, above all, he committed the most heavily punished crime by the law: murder. For these reasons, a life sentence shall be declared upon Henry Jekyll.
First and foremost, Jekyll has committed both murder and physical assault. According to Article 250 of the Criminal Code, a murderer can be sentenced to death or life imprisonment starting at five years. Additionally, Article 260 states that a person who inflicts violence on another person (in the form of assault) can be imprisoned for up to two years or fined up to five million won. Yet, there are more reasons Dr. Jekyllβs punishment should be further aggravated. And that is because Dr. Jekyll committed not just violence, but a physical assault against a child. Indeed, the Child Welfare Legislation deems that a person who assaults a minor must be imprisoned for at least five years or fined up to 50 million won. Thus, regardless of whether Jekyll had committed an intentional first-degree murder or a rather unplanned and impulsive second-degree murder, he should still be heavily sentenced for his wrongdoings.
Secondly, another reason Dr.Jekyll shall receive a life-sentence is for his lack of repentance towards his misdeeds. Dr. Jekyll did not take full responsibility and rather tried to justify his unacceptable actions; perhaps, the witnesses say even after assault and settlement, Mr.Hyde had maintained his defiance and impropriety, with no signs of remorse. Furthermore, Dr. Jekyll had even thought of suicide when he was on the verge of execution as Mr.Hyde. This at once captures his attitude of self-vanity and a lack of remorse, where we can once again observe Dr.Jekyll prioritizing his reputation over the misdeeds he has conducted. Therefore, as a prominent public figure, Jekyll should be sentenced to life so that the upcoming generations are given a social framework where crime is justly and accordingly punished.
Lastly, it should be once again emphasized that Dr.Jekyll had illegally created a new, unwarranted drug substance. In addition to this, as witnessed by his friend Dr. Lanyon, he had also drunk the very substance in order to satisfy and stimulate his desire to commit crime. Therefore, no matter the effects, Jekyllβs punishment shall not be lightened but rather aggravated for his malicious intentions.
Your honor, everyone deserves the freedom to desire and seek pleasure. However, remember that Jekyll is nonetheless a criminal who broke the law by committing assault and murder. Especially as an illuminated public figure, Jekyllβs actions have received great attention, and it would only be reasonable to declare the punishment of a life sentence. Thank you.
